SyncSuite - building reliable technical setups for multimedia performance

Sound, video, light, text, scores, several computers and a stage full of performers: how do you make it all work together? SyncSuite is a toolkit for Max and Max for Live for building reliable technical setups for multimedia performance. It lets you control any media from a central cue list or timeline, render and map video on screens and LED walls, stream digital scores to musicians and connect computers and devices across a local network.

SyncSuite is a toolkit for Max and Max for Live for building reliable technical setups for multimedia performance. It lets you control any media from a central cue list or timeline, render and map video on screens and LED walls, stream digital scores to musicians and connect computers and devices across a local network.

Learning objectives

You will learn to plan and build the technical infrastructure of a multimedia piece, from composition through rehearsals to performance. You will be able to control different media from a single cue list or timeline, send synchronised messages to other software and hardware, map video precisely onto screens, share digital scores over a network and check that all devices are connected. Beyond music, these skills help anyone working in theatre, dance, installation or live events to design stable, well-organised stage technology.

Learning method

The course opens with an introductory video presenting SyncSuite, the problems it solves and how its tools fit together. You then explore the package at your own pace through interactive help files and tutorials built into Max, each focused on one tool or a typical performance scenario: cue-based control, synchronised messaging, multi-screen video, digital scores and network setup. Ready-made Ableton Live sessions, example media and a PDF manual accompany the tutorials, so you can try everything directly and adapt it to your own projects.
