good soil, good future - Healthy soil regenerates resources

Fruit and vegetables nowadays contain fewer nutrients than in the past. This is because soils are severely degraded and provide plants with fewer nutrients. Conventional agricultural practices not only degrade the soil and reduce its fertility but also pollute water bodies. The “good soil, good future” course explains the methods that can be used to improve this condition and how they affect various soil parameters such as water storage capacity and nutrient content. It also suggests simple experiments you can carry out to check and improve soil conditions, whether in your houseplants, garden, or field. Please note: This course is currently in beta. While the core content is ready, we may add new sections, refine materials, and make improvements based on learner feedback.

What to expect

This course introduces the issue of soil health by focusing on its key physical, chemical, and biological properties. You’ll learn what these properties are, how they are measured, and which strategies can improve them to support healthy, fertile soil. To bring the topic to life, the course features a real-world case study from Bavaria, where farmers and water suppliers collaborate to improve soil quality and protect groundwater. You’ll also discover a research project that evaluates the effects of these joint efforts on soil health.
