Lecture 1 - Logistics

1. Logistics

Before you start with the aspects of management & decision-making, look at the introduction of the technical foundations for some general information about the course and to check if you have all knowledge needed for the advanced material.

In waste management systems, the field of collection-transfer-transportation plays a  key role. Logistics is one of the first steps in waste management. Without waste collection and transportation, the management and treatment processes downstream cannot be realized. In an area without a functioning waste logistic system, waste is often burned or dumped, which results in a high rate of infectious disease, toxic airborne chemicals and liquid contamination of water sources. The decision on the design of the disposal logistics is made based on information, e.g., on types of material/waste, quantities of material/waste, possibilities of treatment/disposal, necessary and existing capacities, pollutant potentials, costs, and sales possibilities of the recyclables.

Waste collection also generates its cost, like many other services. In addition, waste transport generates CO2 emissions from machines such as trucks. Therefore, an intelligent planning system, in combination with the modern Geographical information systems (GIS), plays an essential role in saving cost and CO2 emission.

In the end, here are some exercises for the waste collection fee calculation.
