This section represents the beginning of the BioCycle and covers the origin of all food waste: the place where it is generated. As an example, we focus mainly on food waste from households. The section introduces various terms related to food waste, provides statistics at German and European level and ends with suggestions on how to reduce your food waste generation.

The case study is a real-life representation of the BioCycle, the centrepiece of which is a demonstration mini-biogas plant. It is located in the Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg district, more precisely in the Zinnwerke Wilhelmsburg. It shows the cycle from food waste to new products such as biogas and liquid fertiliser, which are used locally. Biogas for cooking and liquid fertiliser to apply on beds. The plant was built in collaboration with students and scientists from Hamburg universities and the local population.
