An inquiry into the meaning of Dalcroze Eurhythmics in the life journey of a student and teacher: an artful autoethnography. The story so far…

This presentation outlines my doctoral research up until now. I am exploring my experiences of studying and teaching Dalcroze Eurhythmics, in the context of the early life influences that might have led me to Emile Jaques-Dalcroze’s approach to music education in my mid-30s. I am particularly interested in the role of the body in my story, and the sense I can make of its encounter with a method that claimed to offer mastery of one’s self through its rhythmic movement. I am documenting my research through a combination of writing and making – making films, making collages, using other art forms to shed light on my findings. This multi-modal, cross-art connection was encouraged during my Dalcroze training and so it seems fitting to communicate my work in this way.
