Definition of Biofuels and Advanced Biofuels

Link zur englischen Version

Biofuels are fuels produced from biomass. According to European legislation, these must achieve a greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction of more than 50% compared to fossil fuels to be classified as biofuels (RED II/III). Advanced biofuels are defined as fuels produced from specific biogenic feedstocks as outlined in Annex IX Part A of Directive (EU) 2023/2413 or 2018/2001. These feedstocks are characterized by being by-products or waste materials with low land and energy requirements compared to conventional cultivated biomass, making them particularly sustainable. Most of the biofuels produced today are based on agricultural biomass resources (cultivated biomass).

We therefore distinguish between:
  • 1st generation biofuels
  • 2nd generation biofuels
  • 3rd generation biofuels
  • 4th generation biofuels
  • Synthetic fuels
