Lecture 6 - Incineration

1. Incineration

Following the waste hierachie it is of course our goal to first Reduce, than Reuse and Recycle materials before we burn them and utilize the produced energy. However, waste also can be hazardous and reducing the health risk and environmental polution posed by untreated waste, is the first goal of waste management as such. Hence incineration is crucial; even when more circular approaches are implemented. Figuratively speaking, one would still need the vacuum cleaner after bringing everything in order at once home. In order to deliver this important topic, Engineer Markus Gleis was invited as a guest lecturer at the lectuer series hold by the German-MENA university network. Mr. Gleis has worked since 1986 in the field of thermal waste treatment at the Federal Environment Agency in the department "Waste Technology, Waste Technology Transfer. His main fields of activity are legal regulations and technical development in thermal waste treatment and hospital waste disposal. He is a national expert and head of the national working group for the revision of the BAT reference document "Waste Incineration" He is also a member of the working group of the Waste Technology Committee of the German Federal States on the editorial revision of the German Implementation Guideline.
