1.3 Lignocellulosic biomass

This book highlights lignocellulosic plants, characterized by their woody tissue composed of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin.

3. Lignocellulosic material from forests and woodworking industry

Lignocellulosic material from forests and woodworking industry

Further by-products from agriculture and forestry with lignocellulose content are available. By-products from forestry are for example residual wood from forests, e.g. unused coarse wood from branches or the tree trunks. Usually they were left in the forests for economic reasons, but also to improve the soil and nutrient supply. Increasingly, however, these materials are also being used as a source of energy.

Residual wood from woodworking industry are residues from sawmilling like sawdust, woodchips or bark. Very often these by-products are already used for example for pellet production or for fibre or particle board production, as well as to cover the own heat demand in the sawmills.

Agricultural wastes with lignocellulosic components are for example straw from cereal production, corn stover, rice husks or in tropical countries also bagasse from sugar cane production.
