This OER is aimed at educators and provides modular teaching material. Clustered according to topics and formats, you can find individual suggestions or entire teaching sessions and adapt them if necessary.
The course begins with a thematic introduction "Anthropocene and Building Culture" (Session 1) and in this context is dedicated to the importance of storytelling in communities and the specific format of material stories (Session 2). The following two sessions will then focus on methodological aspects: In which "dimensions" (Joseph Dumit; Session 3) can be considered in terms of material connections and their investigation (Session 4). The seminar should be structured in such a way that students are given time for field research and writing phases. Partial blocking of the courses is a good idea. A first writing workshop (session 5) is then held on the basis of the initial results. The students discuss and revise their first drafts. While Writing Workshop I concentrates on developing focus, structuring and dealing with the research material, Writing Workshop II provides space for working in detail on formulations, reference forms and image-text references (Session 7). For the final presentation of the course, it is advisable to invite guest critics, as is usual in architecture studios, so that students can find out whether their story has been formulated in an engaging and well-grounded way and presented coherently to outsiders (session 8).
This material has been designed for a seminar with 5 CP / 150 hours workload. Teaching units, as outlined below, vary from 3 SWS and 6 SWS of blocked sessions.
This teaching material is not a complete course: Inputs, external lectures and excursions as offered in the course "Material Stories" at HCU Hamburg have not been included.
