Natural Coastal Ecosystems serving Coastal and Flood Protection

Around the world there are different types of coasts and coastal ecosystems. Each of the ecosystems can provide coastal and flood protection. At least to a certain extent. In the following typical coastal ecosystems are introduced indicating their individual potential ability to act as coastal and flood protection. The considered ecosystems are:

  • Wetland Ecosystems
    • Salt Marshes
    • Mangroves
    • Seagrass Meadows
  • Beach Ecosystems
