Weather and Climate

Weather

The term "weather" describes the physical state of the atmosphere, at a particular time in a particular place. It is the physical state of the atmosphere that we all experience on a daily basis. Weather can be described by various characteristics, such as temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation, cloud cover, The current weather is the result of rapidly changing weather patterns (e.g. a passing low pressure zone). Climate
Climate, on the other hand, describes the average weather, including its extreme manifestations, over a longer period of time at a specific location. The spatial scale can cover a city, a continent or the whole globe. The temporal scale plays an essential role in the assessment of the climate. It must be long enough to make statements about the statistical mean value of a meteorological parameter (e.g. seasonal air temperature). The WMO (World Meteorological Organization) recommends a period of 30 years. (Source: Hamburger Bildungsserver)
