Lecture Hall

Completion requirements

Agent "Observer" steht in einem futuristischen Hörsaal.

What can you expect?

In the lecture hall, you will learn that the “Agents of Change” simulation is a model with many individual “agents.” You will learn the rules they use to decide whether to drop trash or throw it in the trash can. Just like in the real world, the agents influence each other. For positive change to happen, “Agents of Change” are needed. You will learn what makes them special—and how you can easily recognize them in the simulation.

This is what you need:

You don't need any prior knowledge. If you have difficulty hearing, use the subtitles (click on the CC icon at the bottom of the video). They are available in English and German.

This is how you learn:

  • Watch the video presentation
  • Take some time to think about whether you want to be an observer or even an agent of change in the real world. Let our tips help inspire you

Wondering how you can become an agent of change? Here are our tips.

In the video presentation, you learned that it is important to be a good role model and send the right signals. For example:

  • Throw trash in the trash can, not on the ground.
  • Remove trash quickly, or have it removed, before more piles up.

Why? Because trash is “sociable.” That means that when there is trash lying around somewhere, more usually follows. Here is a German news article that describes the relationship using an example from Hamburg (opens in a new window): Wie Hamburg gegen Müllberge in der Pandemie kämpft.

So, what can you do yourself?
  • Report trash and dirty areas:
If you live in Hamburg, you can report trash corners via the city cleaning hotline. Click here for the web form (opens in a new window): Cleanliness hotline of Stadtreinigung Hamburg.
You can also report dirty areas using the app of the Stadtreinigung Hamburg (opens in a new window): More about the app.
  • Participate in trash collection campaigns:
Set a good example and take part in a trash collection campaign in your area. Here you can find information about the “Hamburg räumt auf” campaign (opens in a new window): More about the annual trash collection campaign in Hamburg.
Do you live outside Hamburg and would like to organize a trash collection campaign in your area as part of World Cleanup Day? You can register your campaign here (opens in a new window): World Cleanup Day Website.
