Coastal areas are vital for settlement and trade, with over 100 million people living in flood-prone zones globally. Effective coastal protection prevents regular flooding, essential for regions like northern Germany and Taiwan. Taiwan, frequently hit by typhoons, faces significant human and property losses in coastal areas annually. Climate change exacerbates coastal challenges, increasing hydrometeorological risks. Reevaluation of protection strategies is crucial, emphasizing sustainable, nature-based approaches. Adapting coastal protection measures is imperative to mitigate risks and sustain coastal communities amidst changing environmental conditions.

• Understanding the causes of climate change and its impacts on the regional water cycle and wind regime.
• Understanding how these changes manifest in coastal areas, particularly in Germany and Taiwan.
• Assessing the consequences of changing hydrological and marine meteorological conditions, including extremes, on coastal hydrodynamic and morphodynamic processes, as well as on coastal areas.
• Exploring basic adaptation strategies and measures for climate change, with a focus on Nature-based solutions (NBS) alongside traditional coastal protection measures.
• Acquiring knowledge about the development of NBS, different concepts of NBS, and their potential applications in coastal and flood protection.
