The Most Important Feedstocks Containing Sugar or Starch for Biofuel Production

The most important sugar or starch-containing feedstocks for biofuel (bioethanol) production worldwide are

  • maize (60 % of produced bioethanol), 
  • sugarcane (25 %), 
  • molasses (7 %) und 
  • wheat (4 %). 

The rest is made from other cereals and starch-rich crops. Lignocellulosic or other feedstocks currently play only a minor role.
