The most important sugar or starch-containing feedstocks for biofuel (bioethanol) production worldwide are
- maize (60 % of produced bioethanol),
- sugarcane (25 %),
- molasses (7 %) und
- wheat (4 %).
The rest is made from other cereals and starch-rich crops. Lignocellulosic or other feedstocks currently play only a minor role.
