6. Health and safety at the workplace

Introduction
Throughout various phases of waste management, such as street cleaning, refuse collection, recycling and disposal workers are exposed to serious risks. These health and safety risks are linked to
a)the nature of the waste, as workers are exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals substances, different vapours, smoke, fumes and dust and may also handle infectious materials;
b) the work process, as workers are often affected by a lot of noise, stark vibration, heavy lifting and monotonous handling and
c) work organization, for example working at a high speed, the carrying out of simultaneous activities.

This course will focus on:
  • Hazards
  • Impact
  • Training
  • Equipment
  • Occupational Health
