1. Waste types

There are many different types of waste. Let's recall some of them! Can you match the pictures from the Introduction?

2. Purpose of Waste Charactization

Data on waste is gathered by sorting waste. But why should anyone be willing to sort a pile of residual waste for several hours?

3. Waste sorting

As you learned there is a lot of reason as to why one should sort waste. But how does one take a proper sample without influencing the result? And how is waste sorted? Which categories are there?

Along with the slides you can also take a look at a video made by the TU Dresden during their anual waste sorting experiment.

Sorting Waste – How can heterogeneous waste be analysed and characterised?

And look at the slides to consilidate the knowledge you acquired in the video.

4. Laboratory Analytics

Well, you have a mass balance and samples now but what about all those physical, chemical and biological properties which make it possible to compare and calculate with heterogenous waste fractions? Which ones do you need and which devices can be used to determine them?
